Metabolic Health

Focus: Type 2 Diabetes, Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

Key Driver

Insulin resistance — a condition where the body’s cells don’t respond well to insulin, leading to higher levels of blood sugar and fat in the bloodstream. Over time, this can trigger a cascade of health issues across multiple organ systems, especially the heart and liver.

Type 2 Diabetes

What it is:

A condition where insulin resistance progresses to the point where the body can’t keep blood glucose levels in a healthy range. It develops slowly and is often diagnosed late — or not at all.

Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD)

What it is:

Fat accumulation in liver cells not caused by alcohol, now thought to affect 1 in 3 adults. Strongly linked with insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, and visceral fat.

Why it matters:

MAFLD can progress silently to liver inflammation, fibrosis, and eventually cirrhosis. It also raises the risk of cardiovascular disease — the leading cause of death in people with fatty liver.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

What it is:

A condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep due to blocked airways, often caused by excess tissue in the neck area. Linked with insulin resistance, fatigue, weight gain, and poor metabolic function. OSA increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression.

Why These Conditions Matter Together

All three conditions are deeply interconnected by shared metabolic risk factors — especially insulin resistance and visceral fat. Each condition also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (heart, kidney disease and strokes), and having one makes the others more likely. Addressing them early can prevent progression and dramatically improve long-term health outcomes.
