Key Driver

Many of the top health risks for men are silent and progress without symptoms. Early action makes a big difference. Thrive helps you measure what matters — and change what you can.

Prostate Cancer

What it is:

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. But not all prostate cancers are dangerous — many grow slowly and won’t cause harm in a man’s lifetime. This makes screening a complex, personal decision.

⚠️ Know the symptoms

It’s still important to understand the signs of prostate cancer to look out for, these include difficulties passing urine such as:

  • slow or interrupted flow,
  • needing to go frequently including having to get up at night.
  • visible blood in urine
  • unexpected tiredness and/or weight loss

These are more commonly signs of an enlarged prostate which is very common as men get older and not cancer. So, don’t panic. If you have any of these symptoms it’s important to talk to your GP and get checked out. If caught early, prostate cancer is treatable so don’t put off getting checked.

💡Prostate screening: Making an informed choice

Screening usually starts with a PSA test. If PSA levels are raised, follow-up tests like an MRI or biopsy may be recommended. At the moment, men can only access a Medicare rebate for prostate MRI tests if ordered by a urologist.

✅ Why Screening Matters
  • Catching it early can make treatment simpler and more effective.
  • Some aggressive prostate cancers can spread quickly if not found in time.
⚠️ But There Are Risks Too
  • False positives (high PSA without cancer) can lead to unnecessary worry and tests.
  • Some cancers found may never cause harm, but still lead to overtreatment and side effects like incontinence or erectile dysfunction.

Cardiometabolic Risk in Men

What it is:

Men often develop cardiovascular and/or metabolic disease 10–15 years earlier than women. This includes heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure — often linked to central weight gain, stress, and under-recognition of symptoms.

Mental Health in Men

What it is:

Men are statistically less likely to seek help for mental health concerns — and more likely to experience depression and anxiety in silence. Mental distress in men can also present differently (e.g. irritability, substance use, withdrawal).

Why Men's Health Needs Proactive Attention

Many of the major causes of early death and reduced quality of life in men are preventable — but too often go undetected. Thrive helps close the gap between awareness and action, with tailored tools that help men understand their risk, take charge, and stay well.
