Cancer Prevention

Focus: Bowel, skin, lung, pancreatic, liver (linked to Hepatitis B and Fatty Liver Disease), breast and prostate cancers

Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, but up to one-third of cases may be preventable through lifestyle change, risk monitoring, and screening. Thrive focuses on key preventable cancers where early action can make a major difference.

Bowel Cancer

What it is:

One of the most common and preventable cancers in Australia. It begins as benign growths (polyps) in the bowel that can turn cancerous over time.

Screening prompts:
Automated reminders for FOBT or colonoscopy if needed.

Skin Cancer

What it is:

Australia has the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Includes basal (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma — the most dangerous type.

Lung Cancer

What it is:

Most commonly caused by tobacco use, but also linked to air pollution, second-hand smoke, and occupational exposures such as asbestos.

Screening:
Low-dose CT scan for high-risk individuals (e.g. age 55+ with smoking history > 30 pack years)

Liver Cancer (Hepatitis B or Fatty Liver–linked)

What it is:

A serious cancer often linked to chronic hepatitis B, alcohol misuse, or fatty liver disease.

Referrals:
For screening or Hepatitis B where relevant.

Pancreatic Cancer

What it is:

An aggressive cancer often diagnosed late due to subtle symptoms.

Why Prevention Matters

Many cancers share modifiable risk factors — especially poor diet, smoking, inactivity, alcohol, and inflammation. Thrive’s screening and goal-setting tools help you act before symptoms arise.
